| Sussex RFU Chairman, Allan Butcher, presenting the U15s with the winner's plaque for the RFUW South |
End of Season Awards Day: On the 28th May we had our End
Of Season Awards Day and despite it being a tad chilly, I hope everyone enjoyed it. Below are the awards that were given out/
announced.
We were honoured to have
the Sussex RFU Chairman, Allan Butcher present a Sussex Shield celebrating the success of the SSB's season. This was arranged
by Robin Roberts (thanks Robin!).
As you
know not only have the SSBs had success in the leagues but we have been gaining players throughout the year. We had 13 x U15s and 10 x U18s in the County squads. 6 girls were
put through to Divisional trials and 3 girls were selected - the best numbers in Sussex. The U15s were presented with a plaque from the RFUW for winning the South Coast League.
The U15s 7s Squad got through to the quarter finals of the RFUW National 7s but were then knocked out by a team that got through
to the final. Though the U18s didn't
win their league, coming 3rd in the South Coast league was a massive achievement when they played nearly the entire season
without subs! They also were runners up for the Bowl at the Worthing 10s.
Thank you Firstly a big thank you to the parents for driving the girls around and
supporting enthusiastically no matter how cold or wet it got! Thanks,
cards and wine were/ will be given to: Mike
Clegg - U12s coach Chris Bourne - U15s coach John Breach - U15s coach Jim Bedford - U15s/ U18s coach Darren

Coach Phoebe Hurrell - U18s Coach
Thanks,
card and chocs were given to Robin Roberts and Mick Kirby for the many match reports! Thanks, card and flowers were given to Jayne Clegg and Jackie Webber for stepping in
and acting as managers for some games this season. Thanks,
card and beer was given to Don Simmons for coaching the U18s and for support and being happy to lend Worthing players for
some U18 games this season.
I forgot to mention on the day (sorry Mike) a big thank you to Mike
Clegg who entered a competition on SSB's behalf - (some of you may have seen it on facebook) AEG were offering
prizes for the best 50 entries of a full team kit and washing machine. SSB have got into the top 50! This also means they

Welcome! The South Sussex Barbarians would like
to say welcome back to Lydia Price who rejoins the SSBs U18s team after a long absence with injuries. We hope you enjoy
your first game on Sunday v Solent Sirens.

Divisional Success for the Barbarians! The
South Sussex Barbarians have had the highest success rate in Sussex at the recent Divisional Trials. This season, for
the first time, Regional rugby has been replaced by Divisional rugby, coming into line with the RFU. Due to having
only 4 Divisional squads in the country, competition for places has been phenomenal with an extremely high standard of
rugby from every girl trialling. Girls were nominated by their County coaches and the trials were held at Imber Sports
Club in Esher. The SSBs were proud to have five U15s and one U18 nominated:
U15s: Heather
Clegg, Izzy Collis, Lily Dibb-Fuller, Ashlie Evans and Caitlin Flower U18s: Cassie Larcombe
Congratulations to
the girls selected for the Divisional squad: Heather, Lily and Caitlin. Our commiserations go to those not chosen this
year.
New Barbarians! The South Sussex Barbarians
would like to welcome our new players:
U15s: Jessie Breach and Emily Tilley U18s: Sian Lewis and Molly Woodrup
We're glad you have joined us.........we hope you enjoy your rugby with the SSBs!

Maggie Alphonsi comes to Brighton On Friday evening,
Maggie Alphonsi, probably the most recognised player in women’s rugby, came down to Brighton RFC to coach the South
Sussex Barbarians Margaret Alphonsi, known as
‘Maggie the Machine’, has not only scored 16 tries while winning 49 England caps but is famous for her crunching
tackles and phenominal workrate at the breakdown.
During the session, Maggie worked
with the girls on marking their opposite number, confidence in contact and evasive skills. Afterwards Maggie said “I thoroughly enjoyed working with the girls. They all showed a lot of
enthusiasm and willingness to develop their skills. It is always a pleasure working with the clubs and seeing the effort that
is put in to recruit and develop the young female players to the game.”
The girls, made
the most of their session with the England flanker.U18s Captain, Cassie Larcombe, said “We really enjoyed Maggie being there – it gave the
girls a chance to impress her and show off their skills as they really respect her. It’s good as she’s a very
talented player and I think the girls learnt a lot. Hopefully we can put the things we learnt last night into our next game. At the end of the session,
U18s Vice-Captain, Harriet Dunn, thanked Maggie and presented her with some flowers. It was a real honour for the girls that someone
they respect and have watched play for England would give up her time to come down and coach them. They had a fantastic evening
and will be talking about it for weeks to come. It was a wonderful way to start the season!

County Success for the Barbarians! Once
again, despite increasing numbers of girls playing rugby, the South Sussex Barbarians have had a large number of girls selected
into the County and County Development squads. Not all of the SSB girls wanted to trial but out of those who did, we would
like to congratulate the following girls:
U15 County Squad: Emily Bourne, Jessie
Breach, Hermione Caddick, Heather Clegg, Izzy Collis,
Lily Dibb-Fuller, Ashlie Evans, Caitlin Flower,Kirsten Flower, Natalie Groome
and Polly Roberts.

U18
County Squad: Ellie Bruzas, Harriet Dunn, Charlotte Fenn, Esteira Hiwaizi, Faye Kirby,
